Polkadog's New Green Crab Treat

Our nonprofit is all about eating green crabs and “Problem to Plate”. While we tend to focus on human consumption of green crabs, we’d be remiss in not talking about how Polkadog is switching up the game with a unique green crab pet treat and “Problem to Paw” approach.

Headquartered on the Boston Fish Pier, Polkadog is known for crafting unique dog and cat treats from locally sourced and underutilized ingredients. Included in their current product lineup are several species directly impacted by green crabs such as clams, haddock, and silversides. This past spring on Earth Day, Polkadog released the Green Monstah treat which combines New England green crab meat and Atlantic Sea Farms kelp in a bite-sized and bone format. Green crabs and kelp are both sources of protein and Omega-3s in addition to being sustainable superstar ingredients.

As Polkadog Co-Founder Deb Suchman says “Finding ways to manage the over-abundance of green crab populations in New England waters is the challenge. The reward is the restoration of biodiversity in coastal ecosystems, and the creation of new economic opportunities for local fishers. High-protein kelp, one of the healthiest, richest sources of amino acids, faces increasing stress from warming waters. New England kelp farming is restoring balance to the natural ecosystems.”

Those who want to try Green Monstah treats for their dog or cat can order them online from Polkadog or check out their bakery locations. Polkadog is also hosting a Green Monstah Costume Contest and we’ve been having a ball seeing all of the pets dressing in their finest green crab costumes.
